These are my 9 favorite movies I watched in 2023.

The criteria is just that I must have seen the movie in 2023. It doesn’t matter when the movie came out as long as I personally watched it last year.

These aren’t necessarily the best movies I saw, just the ones I enjoyed the most or the ones that left the strongest impression on me. If a movie is very flawed but I keep thinking about it after seeing it, I consider that a “better” movie than one I maybe really enjoyed at the time but mostly forgot about afterwards.

These aren’t in any particular order, I just arranged the posters how I thought they looked best. The movies are:

Why Barbie was my top movie of 2023

I'm really glad that it was stereotypical Barbie in the movie that went through her identity crisis because I think it shows just how hard literally every women has it when it comes to beauty standards.

Stereotypical Barbie is supposed to be this absolute beautiful woman but her body is going through changes (pretty minor ones at that) that make her sad even though she's still very beautiful. The movie itself even makes a joke about how having a character played by Margot Robbie call herself "not pretty" was a bit ridiculous. The beauty standards that all women have to go through are really extreme and even women like Stereotypical Barbie can't achieve them.

Okay, I know that the point of Renfield is that the main character learns to stand up for himself and not be a put-upon and abused servant anymore. That’s great, that’s awesome, I did not miss the point of the Goofy Vampire Movie.

However…

Seeing pretty goth Nicholas Hoult with his puppy-dog eyes and timid demeanor and quivering lip and his little voice saying “Yes, Master” is hhmmmph it’s making me ~feel things~.
